My authors appreciate my gentle approach to editing and trust my judgment when they veer out of the lane of standard English grammar. Sometimes I guide them back into the lane; sometimes I allow them to wander into other lanes to find their voice and rhythm.

Participating as a judge for the IPNE (Independent Publishers of New England) Book Awards has been a rewarding experience. It is an opportunity to engage with the publishing community and support diverse authors. I perform an in-depth analysis on all parts of an assigned book—the cover treatment; interior layout; chapter, paragraph, and text flow; and front and back matter—providing a score in each of ten categories. Those elements are combined for a total score and submitted to the organization. It is my pleasure to offer my time to an organization committed to writing excellence.
I began judging for the IBPA (Independent Book Publishers Association) Awards in 2026. This is a larger commitment with as many as 20 books assigned to a judge in a single category and approximately two months to complete the review. I was not disappointed by the diverse selection of books in the History category I had the privilege of reviewing. Judges examine cover treatment, publishing elements, content, layout, graphic elements, and overall style against a scale of one to ten. I am honored to have the opportunity to engage with the larger publishing community of independent book publishers.
